Counselor Spotlight – Margarita
In this blog you’ll get to know one of our 2018 counselors, Margarita, who will return for summer 2019. She told us what she loves about El Pueblo Spanish camp, as well as the Spanish language and cultures. We’re excited to have her back as a counselor for El Pueblo 2019!
What do you love about El Pueblo Spanish Camp?
I love the passion that our team has for Spanish speaking cultures and the diverse environment that the camp brings. Sharing this passion encourages the campers to discover and learn new things. There is never a boring moment at El Pueblo. Whether we are dancing, playing a sport, or eating a snack. There is always time to share our passion and learn something new.
What is your experience with Spanish language and cultures?
I’m from the Dominican Republic so for a long time I only knew about my country and culture. From the moment I moved to Knoxville, I started meeting people from all over, especially from Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela and Colombia. I realized that Spanish speaking cultures have a lot of things in common and I learned to learn and embrace our differences.
How do you continue to learn and share Spanish language and cultures?
I continue to learn about Spanish culture with music. I have a diverse music taste and I love dancing to Latin music. Recently I’ve discovered the band Porter. From their songs, I have learned a lot about Mexican history. Also, I feel like in my day to day experiences I get to share about my own culture, whether it is with my classmates or with my students. Most of the time I get questions about what the Dominican Republic is like and I’m always excited to share everything I know!
Who is your favorite Spanish speaking singer?
My favorite Spanish speaking singer is Juan Luis Guerra. He’s a merengue singer from the Dominican Republic. I grew up listening and dancing to his music. He’s one of the most famous artists from the DR. There’s even a restaurant dedicated to him in Punta Cana, which I got to visit over the summer last year.
Where do you live?
I live in Knoxville, Tennessee.
What do you do?
I’m a student at Pellissippi State Community College and I work for Centro Hispano de East Tennessee where I’m an ESL tutor for a local elementary school.
