Tu vecino – Lily Sanchez, La Paz Chattanooga

Our Chattanooga area is home to many awesome Spanish-speakers. In our Tu vecino blog, we highlight some of our incredible Spanish-speaking neighbors! This month, Marisol visited The Spot with Lily Sanchez. In this blog, learn more about her and her work with the La Paz Chattanooga!

¿Qué hace? What does she do?

Lily is the Communications and Business Development Coordinator at La Paz Chattanooga. She manages their social media, creates marketing content and design, writes newsletters and press releases, and more! She enjoys working for La Paz because it combines her skill sets and interests with the ability to serve the community she is most passionate about: the Latino Community.

¿Cuáles son sus metas profesionales? What are her professional goals?

“I want to be able to tell the story of La Paz well,” says Lily. She hopes to continue developing and growing within her role at La Paz because she is passionate about the empowerment of and advocacy for the Latino community. She would like to see our Chattanooga community continue to grow in the way it embraces our latino neighbors. Lily hopes to see more employment opportunities, more high quality legal services offered, and investing more in Latino youth. Her work allows her to be a part of the ongoing support of her community, something that is very important to her.

¿Cuáles son sus experiencias con el español y la cultura latina? What is her background with Spanish language and culture?

Lily grew up learning Spanish and speaking it at home. Her parents are from the Dominican Republic and moved to the states before she was born. She lived in both the US and the Dominican Republic while growing up, and has people she loves and cares about in both places. As a child she learned Spanish informally at home, something that many kids in Chattanooga can likely relate to. Lily later gained skills in writing and understanding Spanish grammar in school.  While she likes living in Chattanooga, she misses her friends and family in the Dominican Republic, and also the way of life she experienced there.

Marisol enjoyed getting to know Lily a bit more over some coffee, and she is excited to learn more about the work Lily and the La Paz team do to serve our Latino neighbors.
